The Challenge
The Joint Venture of Hunt Construction Group, Mascaro and ATS–Chester provided Construction Management Services (CM) for the new 65,000–seat Pittsburgh Steelers NFL Stadium (Heinz Field), completed in August 2001 for total contract value of $264 million. These services included pre–construction services and services during construction.
The project utilized 48,000 cubic yards of cast in place concrete, 12,000 tons of structural steel, 10,442 lineal feet of auger cast piles, 30,000 gallons of paint, 50,000 square feet of glass, 1,000 doors, 7 miles of railings and 1.85 miles of drainage, irrigation and heating pipes under the field.
The Interdisciplinary Approach
As with most large public projects, there are extensive numbers of stakeholders that require very close collaboration and management between the owner, architect, engineers, the public, governmental agencies, consultants, subcontractors, and 1,400 construction workers.
The Sustainable Result
The stadium was designed and built to celebrate Pittsburgh’s history of steel production in mind with 12,000 tons of steel into the design. The sustainable result is a state-of-the-art stadium celebrating Pittsburgh’s heritage in steel that serves as the home field of the Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Football. The project was completed in two years with no construction accidents or lawsuits.
